Lansing Area Manufacturing
Partnership Project. In April 1998, NIWL began examining a business/union-driven,
school-to-career initiative known as The Lansing Area Manufacturing Project
(LAMP), an innovative partnership sponsored by the United Auto Workers
(UAW), General Motors Corporation (GM), and the Ingham Intermediate School
District. The program combines classroom instruction with work-based learning
at GM facilities. NIWL is assisting in the development, implementation,
evaluation, and replication of this initiative through several closely
related projects including:
LAMP Evaluation. NIWL conducted a comprehensive case study evaluation
of the LAMP partnership, collecting data through site visits, interviews,
focus groups, telephone surveys, and document review. LAMP coordinators
used the data to modify the curriculum, improve program design, solve logistical
problems, and make course corrections as needed.
National Roll-Out. NIWL is assisting in the strategic planning
and design of a national roll-out process that seeks to replicate the LAMP
model in locations nationwide.
Detroit Evaluation: The first replication site selected
for national roll-out was Detroit, Michigan. NIWL conducted a case study
evaluation deliberately designed to aid in the program's development and
growth.
LAMP Longitudinal Study: NIWL designed a follow-up system
to track LAMP participants through their early post-graduation careers.
Starting in the fall of 1999, NIWL undertook a five-year longitudinal study
of LAMP graduates to determine the program's long-term effects on students'
academic achievement and career progression.
